Obituary for Gertrude A Patton (Wiles)

Gertrude A. (Wiles) Patton 83 of Weeping Water Passed away in Lincoln Tuesday January 10, 2017
Born May 10,1933 to Roy E. Wiles Sr. and Della M (Coster) Wiles on the family farm northeast of Weeping Water. She attended Chilson country school through the eighth grade then completed her education at Weeping Water High School. During her sophomore year she began dating Arvin Patton, who later became the love of her life. They Graduated in 1950 and were married on January 28, 1951. To this union were born three children Diane, James and Steve.
Gert attended cosmetology school and graduated in 1962. Throughout her education she faced the challenge of raising three young children at home while her husband was occasionally called out of town to work on the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America repair crew. She also commuted daily to school in Omaha through one of the worst winters on record with snow at times measuring as much as 27 inches. She faced those challenges with the strength of character and determination she was known for. Upon graduation, Gert and Arvin transformed a room in their home into a beauty shop known for 13 years throughout the area as Gert's Beauty Salon. Customers said Gert gave one of the best razor haircuts around!
In 1975, Arvin's job transferred them to Beatrice where she continued her trade for several more years. While in Beatrice, they enjoyed ballroom dancing with Gert's favorite dances being the rumba and swing. They also participated in bowling league; attended church and bible study classes and enjoyed weekend visits with their family. During those weekend visits there were occasional incidents with a few territorial ground squirrels that usually ended with Arvin doing right by Gert, the soft-hearted grandchildren AND the ground squirrel by practicing the humane "catch and release" tactic. Gert was an awesome cook and her kitchen was ALWAYS open to her family but ground squirrel was NOT on her menu!
Gert was an exceptional seamstress and crafted several men's suit coats, suit pants, beautiful dressed and even cabbage patch kid dolls for two of her grandsons. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting and painting in her spare time.
In 1990, Arvin retired and they returned to Weeping Water where they enjoyed family activites including school functions and sporting events while having the opportunity to see each of their eight grandchildren graduate from Weeping Water High School.
In 2012, Gert's health began to decline, Arvin provided her with great care and loving support. Bringing them even closer than ever before until her death.
